About

Picture

The workshop meets at the Downers Grove Library, at 7:00 PM, 1050 Curtiss Street, Downers Grove, in the north meeting room on the first floor on the second and fourth Monday of each month.

We are a leaderless group. Our process is what drives the meetings. At each meeting, up to three volunteers will commit to reading at the next meeting. During the intervening period, those volunteers will upload their selection to our Member "only" Access Page where it will be available for download to the rest of the workshop. The downloaded documents can then be printed and thoughtfully critiqued before they are read. Ideally members will have their material available at least a week before the meeting at which they are scheduled to read. After a member reads his or her piece out loud, the rest of the group offers verbal suggestions and the written critiques on members' copies are also given to the author.

Members also provide information on submission opportunities, writing workshops and courses, and publishing tips.

Since we all share the goal of becoming better writers, the criticism is always polite and constructive. Members of the group that have been attending for any period of time concur that the 'workshop' process improves their writing.

There are no requirements for membership, access to the Members Access page, where files may be uploaded and downloaded, is granted to anyone who attends and expresses an interest in joining the group, but otherwise cannot be seen by non members.

How We Work

The Downers Grove Writers' Workshop (DGWW) has a diverse set of participants, but all attend for the same purpose: to improve their writing.  To make sure everyone can make the most of the allotted time, we ask that those that join in abide by the following guidelines.

Participate.  The DGWW has been successful because the in people in it participate.  This means that we’re looking for people to contribute feedback to the discussions so that all presenters benefit from the experience.

Be punctual.  As much as possible make efforts to be on time for the meetings.  Late arrivals create disruption in the reading and in the discussion which is unfair to the presenter.

Be thoughtful.  One of the primary functions of the DGWW is to facilitate feedback, so honest critiques are helpful to each presenter.  Always make sure that the feedback provided is polite and constructive, designed to help the writer, but not to direct the story.

Be present.  Make sure to silence mobile devices so they don’t disrupt presentations or discussions.  If you must take a call or reply to a text, please excuse yourself from the room to do so.

Vegas Rules.  What is shared in DGWW stays in DGWW.  Participants are sharing their writing in various stages of completion.  Be respectful of their work and be mindful to not share their writing or ideas with others outside of the meetings.
